How to Safely Clean Your Hardwood Floor

Hardwood floors are a timeless, elegant and durable design element that fit into nearly any style of décor. High quality hardwood floors are among the top floor coverings chosen by homeowners – but the thought of cleaning them safely can be a bit intimidating. Keeping your hardwood floors looking new and fresh requires a bit of work and maintenance – and the right cleaning products. Here are some tips to help you keep your hardwood floors looking brand new or bring them back to life.

Prevention is always best.

It is always easier to prevent serious damage to your floors than it is to mend it. These tips will help you prevent dirt from damaging your floors.

Use mats and area rugs at each entrance to capture dirt that might get tracked in. Tiny particles of dirt and sand will damage the finish on your hardwood floors, and those tiny scratches collect dirt so that your floor requires more frequent cleaning. Placing mats or area rugs at each entrance to the room will keep the dirt off your floors and keep them looking new longer.
Do not use rubber-backed or non-ventilated rugs. They can damage your floor. Instead, look for mats made specifically for hardwood floors.
Shake the mats out regularly so that dirt does not work its way through them to damage the floor beneath.
Mop up all spills promptly to avoid damage to the finish or the wood.
Avoid sun damage by using window treatments or awnings, and regularly rotate furniture and rugs so that the entire floor ages evenly.
Put floor protectors on furniture and table legs to avoid damage and wear from the weight of the furniture.
Never drag furniture across floors. Lift and carry to avoid scratches in the surface of the floor.
Avoid walking on your floors in stiletto heels and keep pet nails trimmed to avoid scratching and denting your hardwoods.

A Truly Green Kitchen…your Friends Will Envy

As a kitchen designer for the last eight years, shoulder to shoulder with my clients I have battled a myriad of kitchen remodeling challenges: soffits, out of level floors, windows over stoves, chimneys and pipe chases to name a few. I love it when my client rattles off five or six things about their existing kitchen design that they absolutely hate. I now know exactly what to avoid in their kitchen remodel, and I know there is nothing I have found yet that I can’t fix with a new kitchen layout! I never looked for alternative solutions such as kitchen refacing, why would I? Selling cabinets was part of my job. And if anyone brought up kitchen refacing, it became very clear:  I was a kitchen cabinet refacing snob.

If asked, I would explain simply to the customer, that the kitchen refacing process was nearly as expensive as a full kitchen remodel, and after all the mess and inconvenience involved in kitchen reface, you ended up with basically the same kitchen design you had before, who would want that? The kitchen cabinet refacing service provided by most companies, I explained pretty much like this:

remove old doors and drawers fronts
sand cabinet surfaces,
smear with glue,
slap up plain laminate
install new doors and drawer fronts
leave customer with same old floor, counter top, layout and basic look

…and then, the nice folks generally purchased a new kitchen.  The neighbors new it was coming the moment I had a 30 yard dumpster dropped in Mr. and Mrs. Happy Kitchen-Customers driveway. A typical kitchen remodel takes between six and twelve weeks, and the dumpster often remains there for almost the whole time, just to be sure that all the debris was properly removed.

What Ideas Should You Expect in a Bridal Shower Party?

A bridal shower is composed of different shower ideas, from the shower theme, decorations, food to shower favors. The first step in planning a bridal shower party is to decide the theme of the celebration.

When choosing the theme, it is always best to think about something that reflect the interests and likes of the bride-to-be. For example, you can plan a kitchen-themed shower for a bride who loves to cook.

After the shower theme has been decided, you can now proceed to other shower details such as the bridal shower invitations. Choose invitations that compliments the shower theme. There are so many types of invitation designs that are available both in online and local retail stores. The number of invitation should be based on the number of guests you wish to invite. If you want to save extra bucks, you can buy a pre-printed set of invitations or make your own using your personal computer.

The theme of the shower is also your reference when choosing the bridal shower decorations. A good choice of shower decorations should give an aesthetic function as well as a practical function to the party. The basic bridal shower decorations needed are the table cloths, table napkins, centerpieces, glasses, draping fabric, banners, and other wall and ceiling ornaments.

In order to make the bridal shower more fun and memorable, plan several bridal shower games. There are so many bridal shower games to choose from. You may include traditional games such as Balloon Pop Games, The Life Thread Game, and guessing games and trivia about the couple. Of course, you will need to choose games that compliments the shower theme also.
The food you will serve should be also based on the theme of the shower. For instance, if the shower is a Mediterranean-themed party, then basically the menu you should serve are Mediterranean delicacies that include the best of Italy, Greece, France and other Mediterranean countries’ recipes.
