‘Home appliances’ is a term which is used very popularly today but what does it stand for? Home appliances stand for the mechanical and electrical products which are used at home for the functioning of a normal household. The home appliances are stuffs which are used to for  cooking, cleaning, washing, laundry and various other functions which are carried out in every home.

But all appliances used for the running of the household cannot be brought under one umbrella head of ‘ home appliances’ for even this category can be divided in to two broad groups- the small appliances and major appliances.

Know about Small appliances

Small appliances generally refer to stuffs which are almost portable; they can be stored at place, taken out for use and again kept back. They are mostly used to keep on places like table- tops or some other platforms. Since they are portable they can be in places which are designated for them. The small appliances can be used for various purposes like cleaning, washing, cooking, laundry etc.

For example for cooking small appliances like toaster, blender, mixture, oven etc can be used. Steam irons, clothes shavers can be used for laundry purposes. For cleaning there are appliances like steam cleaners and vacuum cleaners. There are even home comfort small appliances available I  the market like humidifiers, dehumidifiers, heaters etc.

Know about Major appliances

The major appliances unlike their smaller counterparts are big and cannot be moved easily from place to another. They need to be plugged in to an electric supply source in the house to make them work. The examples of major appliances are the stove, micro oven, washing machine, refrigerator, dish washer, dryer etc.

With the change in lifestyle of the working class people, proper kitchen appliances are a must. Earlier people, especially women, faced problems to maintain a balance between their personal and professional life due to excess work load in office as well as completing extensive household chores. The middle class women were the worst hit. The reason being, women were always held responsible for low quality food. Finally,the outcome was an unsatisfactory marital relationship and a stressful life both in office and at home.

However, the latest technology has brought a sigh of relief among women. It is true that today both men and women work together at home to ease their household work pressure. Under such circumstances, the Kitchen appliances have come very handy. They offer a faster and easier way to cook and warm food. The famous Microwave oven can warm food by dielectric heating procedure without risk of burning or spoiling it. You can even control the amount of heat and the time duration to warm the food. After the time lapses and the food is warm, it gives a sound signal. In fact, it can also maintain the existing level of vitamins and minerals and also prevents food from being contaminated. Forget about the micro oven, even the old refrigerator which we are all aware about, has gone through unpredictable technological change. Home appliances are typically classified into two main categories:

A) Small Appliances

B) Major Appliances

According to wikipedia, small appliance refers to class of appliances that are semi-portable or are used on tabletops, countertops and other platforms. These appliances are often taken out when needed and stored away when not in use. Some example of small home appliances are – coffee makers, blenders, juicers, rice cookers, food processors, mixers, toasters, toaster ovens (which are all kitchen appliances); vacuum cleaners, steam cleaners (which are cleaning appliances); steam irons, garment steamers, clothes shavers (which are laundry appliances); hair dryers, hair strengtheners, curling irons, electric toothbrushes, electric men’s shavers, ladies personal shavers & epilators, hair clippers (which are all personal care appliances); electric fans, space heaters, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers (which are all home comfort appliances).

Major Appliance are defined are fixtures that are not easily moved. These appliances are large and wired into an electrical supply or permanently plugged into a household electrical outlet. Major appliances usually remain in place when a property is purchased or sold. The kitchen stove, range hood, microwave oven, refrigerator, dish washer, washing machine, and dryer are the most common examples of major appliances.

There are now some appliances which have traditionally been considered major appliances, but may also be classified as small appliances. These include portable air conditioners, portable washing machines, and portable dish washers.

Home appliances are integral to modern lifestyles. Choosing the right home appliances not only saves time but also make life much easier and comfortable. Home appliances can be classified into two groups: white goods and brown goods. Kitchen Appliances
By definition the kitchen is a room used for food preparation that is typically equipped with a stove, a sink for cleaning food and dishwashing, and cabinets and refrigerators for storing food and equipment.
Kitchens Appliances have been around for centuries, however, it was not until post-civil war period that the majority of kitchen appliances were invented. The reason was that most people no longer had servants and housewives working alone in the kitchen needed culinary help. Also the advent of electricity greatly advanced the technology of labor saving kitchen appliances.
